have hunting dog that is scared of gun fire what do i do?
my hunting dog bandy is a great hunter she points and flushes but is scared of gun fire what should i do? oh and she is not the conventional gun dog she is a smooth fox terrier (and yes she is a true hunter!)
Yes you will have to desensitize her to the sound in a very gradual gradient manner. But depending on how you initially introduced her to gun shots – the environment itself now might be a fearful place for her. Fear is a fast learnt behavior and can flood the enivornment – meaning having a strong association to things in that environment.
Desensitiztion is usually a long-term process. Find a CD that has fireworks/gun sounds and then gradually from a very, very low intensity increase the noise to loud over months. You may also want to pair it up with a less threatening stimulus. See

Or how about going to a gun range and hanging out far enough where the sound is low intensity and you do some training and the every time you go – just move in a little closer. Time duration – as long as possible and as long as she’s relaxed and calm. So a session should last 1-3 hrs.
